California Quail

California Quail (Callipepla californica). 9.5-11". A small,
plump, grayish, bird with a short black plume curving forward from the
crown. Males have a black and white face and throat pattern. Voice: a
three-syllabled qua-quer'go or Chi-ca-go. Resident from
British Columbia to Baja California. Habitat: broken charparral, woodland
edges, coastal scrub, parks, estates, farms. This quail was photographed
in Pt Reyes.
