Sitka Channel
Copyright Barbara Samuelson 1997
This is the view of the channel at Sitka, Alaska during the morning
in June 1997. Mt. Edgecumbe is visable through the cloud cover across
the channel. Sitka is the main city of any size on Baranof Island. Originally
inhabited by the Tlingit Indians, Russians established a furtrading post
and fort in Sitka in 1799. The official transfer of Alaska to the United
States occurred on October 18, 1867, in ceremonies at the Russian capital
of Sitka. I saw harbor porpoise, salmon, halibut,
orca, harbor seals, and sea otters all in the
channel.
